I would like to add that I live in Australia and we have yet to receieve every oscar contender and critcally acclaimed movie from 2015 so I will be adding to the list in coming weeks (probably just before the oscars).

01

Mommy (Dir. Xavier Dolan)

This is the second Xavier Dolan (a French-Canadian director) movie I have seen after 'I Killed my Mother' and I can see how far he has come since and how he has improved on his films between the aforementioned films. The movies contains narrative that is a common drama seen in Hollywood. An american family drama when everyone in the family has their problems and the family is overall, dysfunctional. However there is emotion and chatacter that is almost never present in hollywood films and along with it's techincal achievements it makes it a must see for everyone.

02

Mad Max: Fury Road (Dir. George Miller)

An action film has never been a serious contendor for oscars until this movie. Most action films are filled with CGI, implied action and one dimensional characters but Mad Max is THE polar opposite. It has pratical effects, action we not only see but there is rhythm to it which SHOULD win it best editing at the oscars next month and characters that developed in scenes between the action scenes but also during. This is an action movie for the history books.

03

Sicario (Dir. Denis Villeneuve)

If Mad Max: Fury Road had not come out this year this would be the action movie to remember and for a good reason. The movie has more scenes that further story and character but every scenes has the tension and when it starts to slow we put back right into the action. While you might have heard about the directing or cinematography which for Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deaking are both at the top of their games, respectively, I need to give the underdog award for the movie to Jóhann Jóhannsson for the eerie score.

04

99 Homes (Dir. Ramin Bahrani)

Probably one of the most underrated movie of 2015 and it's probably because it started its run on the festival circuit in late 2014. Probably the best movie about the GFC that isn't about the people behind it and it's backed up strongly by it's acting by Andrew Garfield and Laura Dern but most importantly the performance by Michael Shannon. If you aren't convinced by the trailer watch the movie and you will be intrigued by the opening shot.

05

The Walk (Dir. Robert Zemeckis)

A movie that didn't manange to find huge amounts of love by critics or auidences alike. The 3D alone is worth admission alone. A lot of people have been vocal about Joseph Gordon-Levitt's french accent but I thought he pulled it off really well and it's not over the top.

06

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (Dir. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon)

Probably not a movie for most as it contains several (lots) of references to classic and classic foreign films as well as the fact this is a romantic comedy. The movie uses the most of the 2.35.1 aspect ratio and it's a more creative comedy than what just about everything hollywood is turning out today.

07

Inside Out (Dir. Pete Docter and Ronnie del Carmen)

The time has come. The time for Pixar's comeback. After Monster's University, Brave and Cars 2 which were no where near the pixar quality we have come to expect and love this was the movie that we needed. For a movie about emotions it come as no suprise that this a very emotional film.

08

The Lobster (Dir. Yorgos Lanthimos)

While not coming out in the USA until 2016 Australia was lucky enough to get this gem in 2015. A comedy that is great on a technical level which is so rare these days outside of Edgar Wright. The movie also has heavy undertones that reflect todays society.

09

Creed (Dir. Ryan Coogler)

I would never have imagined that I would like the seventh edition of the rocky franchise more than Star Wars seventh edition but here we are. This movie packs more orginality and freshness to it compared to Star Wars while having plenty of references to the earlier Rocky films. With probably Sylvester Stallone's best performance. This movie punches you emotionally.

10

The Assassin (Dir. Hou Hsiao-Hsien)

So this is probably the film you have not heard off. Winning best director at Cannes this film had my attention off the bat and it did not disapoint. Probably my favorite Chinese/Hong Kong film along with In the Mood for Love. With a direction unlike anyother movie from the year and any other martial arts film, it makes it a must watch for the art house crowd.

11-20

The Next Tier

So with so many good films coming out this year I will just list the rest below (in order).

11. The Revenant (Dir. Alejandro González Iñárritu)

12. Youth (Dir. Paolo Sorrentino)

13. Knight of Cups (Dir. Terrence Malick)

14. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Dir. J.J. Abrams)

15. Crimson Peak (Dir. Guillermo del Toro)

16. Wild Tales (Dir. Damián Szifron)

17. It Follows (Dir. David Robert Mitchell)

18. The Martian (Dir. Ridley Scott)

19. The Gift (Dir. Joel Edgerton)

20. Shaun the Sheep (Dir. Mark Burton and Richard Starzak)

I could write a lot more about each movie but I wouldn't want to bore you, but what was your top 10 for 2015 was it Mommy, Mad Max: Fury Road or even Fifty Shades of Grey (which I hope it isn't).

If you want to read more about the listed movies simply contact me or look them up on IMDb and read some reviews for them online.
